A complex lining project carried out by Catalyst Services UK has rehabilitated drains beneath an elderly and vulnerable man’s house and cleared a rat infestation that had continued for months.
A new case study detailing the project explains how the householder’s insurer called in Catalyst to investigate the persistent rodent infestation problem.
A thorough CCTV drainage survey revealed the rats had been getting into a void beneath the house’s suspended concrete floor through large cracks in the drainage system.
Lifting up the concrete floor to repair and replace damaged pipes would have been very costly and very disruptive for the elderly policyholder, who would have had to move out while the work was done.
Catalyst devised an alternative approach, using blue light cured in place pipe (CIPP) lining to restore the pipes’ integrity, strengthen them and eliminate the cracks through which the rats could get into the house.
Catalyst Managing Director Brad Jackson explained: “The pipes were so damaged that it was legitimate to consider excavating and replacing them.
“But lining them was a quicker, more sustainable, far less costly for our insurer client and far less disruptive for their claims customer. So it was a genuine win-win.
“The pipes were so damaged in places that we were pushing the technology close to its limit, but the specialist lining team did a fantastic job and our client and their customer were extremely pleased.”
